Product Description

Gliolan® (5-aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride , 5-ALA HCl) is used in fluorescence-guided resections as a tool for the visualisation of malignant glioma tissue during neurosurgery. The procedure is straight forward and resection occurs during real-time imaging of the tumour without tedious interruptions. The only difference to conventional microsurgical resections is the oral administration of Gliolan® and the availability of adequate microscopical equipment.

Active Ingredient

5-Aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride (5-ALA HCl)

Mode of Action

5-ALA is a prodrug that is metabolised intracellularly to form the fluorescent molecule protoporphyrin IX (PPIX). The exogenous application of Gliolan® leads to a highly selective accumulation of PPIX in tumour cells. Following excitation with blue light, the PPIX in the malignant tissue emits a red-violet light, while normal brain tissue appears blue.

Indication

Visualisation of malignant tissue during surgery for malignant glioma (WHO grade III and IV)

Dosage

Powder for oral solution:

1.17 g of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), corresponding to 1.5 g 5-aminolevulinic
acid hydrochloride (5-ALA HCl)
